RN/LPN
POSITION: RN/LPN
RESPONSIBLE TO: Clinical Lead / Practice Administrator
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION:
- Performs and properly documents procedures, including but not limited to, vital signs, dressing changes, and suture removal.
- Administers medications using proper technique and documentation as prescribed by the physician or nurse practitioner.
- Acts as liaison between provider and patient.
- Escorts patient to the examination room, collecting, reporting, and documenting data, including, but not limited to, patient’s chief complaint, vital signs, weight, height, current medications, and patient comfort level. Update the medical records for provider’s review.
- Calls prescriptions in to pharmacies as directed by provider and document the call.
- Respects and maintains levels of patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA guidelines.
- Collects specimens for diagnostic studies and perform other procedures, completing the necessary documentation as directed by the provider.
- Assists with procedures utilizing aseptic technique, application of minor dressings, removing sutures, and applying splints as directed by the provider.
- Maintains medical equipment in proper working order, including cleaning and sterilizing of instruments.
- Communicates plan of care to patients as directed by provider, including test results, scheduling of specialized tests, treatment modalities, setting up home therapies for patient use, prescription drug instructions and other patient education.
- Communicates restocking needs to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
- Calls hospital to obtain any necessary results such as labs, x-rays, in a timely manner.
- Arranges for patients diagnostic testing and admission.
- Schedules surgeries and works with multidisciplinary team for scheduling, including pre-authorization staff and surgery center/hospital scheduling.
- Acts as a referral and teaching model for medical assistants.
- Facilitates communication between nursing and front desk staff for optimal patient care.
- Assists the provider in emergency situation.
- Checks expiration dates on all samples and formulas at regular intervals.
- Assists with orientation and precepting of fellow employees as directed by Clinical Lead.
- Schedules testing as requested by provider.
- Completes pre-surgical orders in EPIC for physicians.
- Review surgery notes for possible corrections with physician.
- Performs patient teaching as warranted.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
- Phone Triage Nurse - Handles telephone triage, call backs, medication refills, and patient questions.
- Sets up and restocks exam room, maintaining order and cleanliness of room, workstations, and general clinical area.
- Fills out necessary paperwork for patient prior to provider’s visit.
- Keeps working environment clean, safe, and organized for patients and staff. Reports any malfunctioning equipment to the appropriate person.
- Attends all necessary meetings to be updated on policies and procedures.
- Documents all information in the medical record in a legible style, dated and signed with credentials.
- Follows OSHA and safety requirements for rooms and documentation.
- Performs other duties as assigned, including cross-training in other functional areas.
- Attends required meetings and participates on committees as requested.
- Maintains a professional and positive attitude with interacting with patients and other staff members.
- Maintains a positive, professional, and productive attitude toward patients and staff.
QUALIFICATIONS/SPECIFICATIONS
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Iowa Nursing License from accredited school of nursing.
Current CPR card.
Mandatory Reporter Training
Experience: One year work experience in a medical setting with clinic or surgical experience preferred
Knowledge: Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and written. Computer
Skills & Ability: Ability to adapt and apply guidelines and procedures. Ability to set priorities, identify and resolve problems effectively and efficiently. Ability to work independently with minimum of supervision.
Attitude: Exhibits a “Can Do” attitude and is willing to go above and beyond to help the patient, family member, or other clients. Exhibits a cooperative and courteous telephone manner. Maintains a friendly, cooperative, and courteous attitude despite competing demands.

Supervision: Under direct supervision of Clinical Lead.
Other Contact: Constant contact with patients, general public and staff. Contact requires the ability to communicate in English, both written and verbal, and a cooperative and courteous attitude despite simultaneous tasks. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public.
Errors: Errors could result in service delays and patient dissatisfaction, so must work accurately.
Confidentiality: May be exposed to confidential information whose disclosure would be contrary to the best interest of Orthopaedic Specialists and professional ethics.
Sensory Demands: Ability to maintain a cooperative and courteous attitude despite simultaneous demands. Requires manual coordination to operate medical equipment and instruments
Physical Demands: Requires full range of body motion, including handling and lifting patient, manual and finger dexterity, and eye coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 70 lbs.
Working Conditions: Exposure to bodily fluids, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medical preparations, and other conditions common to office environment

Travel: There will be offsite travel up to 35 miles.
